God Has Sent To Us One Of His Angels -- |

"Sissel" is the Norwegian derivative of the English name "Cecilia" It is a rare and unusual name, commonly found in Denmark and Norway, where it is cherished for its traditional roots. The name is sometimes associated with notable figures in music and arts. Its connection to nature and strength makes it suitable for individuals that embody these qualities. Objectively, it is most commonly associated with the Latin word "caecus", meaning "blind or dim-sighted". Subjectively, however, the name is also linked to Saint Cecilia, a Roman martyr, considered to be the patron saint of music and musicians. This connection often leads to interpretations of Cecilia as representing spiritual vision, hidden beauty, or a girl with vision more than sight. It symbolizes the depth of perception beyond seeing (on the surface). The above listed three DVD collections EACH contain OVER five hours of "Angelic and Heavenly Sights and Sounds", designed to transport the listener from this world of earthly cares into Sissel's World of Ethereal Beauty. |

"The Sissel Magic" ** or ** "The Spirit Within" I was reflecting upon Sissel's singing the other day, and a very interesting thought came into my mind. It compares her and her career alongside two other singers of similar vocal backgrounds -- an Anna Hawkins from New Zealand and a Guadalupe Pineda from Guadalajara, Mexico. All three are what is popularly called, "classical crossover' singers. This term refers basically to those who have participated in classical and operatic performances and have (crossed-over) into the "pop" arena. They also occupy what might be termed "niche markets", meaning that while they have performed all over the world, their main popularity still resides within their home country or area. Also, though each in their own right are very talented singers, they never achieved worldwide "Star" status as have SO many FAR less talented individuals !! However, what was REALLY impressed upon me is the VASTLY different levels of recognition and "stardom" that each has achieved with their respective talents. In MY evaluation - ranking the three - Sissel is (of course) number one, followed by Guadalupe and finishing up with Anne. Anne is the youngest at around 39, followed by Sissel at 57, and lastly Guadalupe at 71. I am not going to elaborate upon Sissel's background, credentials nor performance history, since this page and the overall "Sissel Site", via the various links, is loaded with relevant information.
The style of both Sissel and Guadalupe strongly emphasizes emotional interpretation and versatility across genres. What I want to examine now is what I would call "The Tangible Differences" between these three very talented performers and singers. They each have fine soprano voices, though again, Sissel's rates an easy "#1, with Guadalupe #2 and Anna coming in at a rather distant #3. Sissel's voice has been described by fans, professional music critics and fellow musicians alike using many terms - from "the voice of an Angel and Goddess" to being one of the MOST beautiful, enchanting, melodic and mesmerizing of all times, the likes of which we shall perhaps not be privileged to experience again. In more concrete terms, it is VERY clear and sharp (crystalline), almost without accent, with excellent control and purity of tone. She is classified as a lyric soprano - reaching from mezzo-soprano Db3 to high soprano at E6, Db6, or the Db (or F) above soprano C (C6). This gives her versatility - from warm, lower tones to ethereal, stratospheric highs. Despite her high soprano range, her talking voice has been described by one person as "the soft, warm purring of a kitten". I now want to examine a quality which MANY might consider as being irrelevant to their standing as vocal artists - and SOME might find it offensive that it would even be included here. However, we do NOT live in an ideal "utopian paradise" where "all people are created equal" and should only be measured by their "Talent" alone. The quality that I am addressing is BEAUTY - external, internal and perceived. If we will be honest with ourselves, we will have to concede that we are not "purely objective robots nor purely minds". Our likes, loves and thoughts are influenced by input from ALL of our senses. Inwardly (even though we may be taught to control it) we are drawn to beauty and repulsed by (perceived) "ugliness". Sissel's fans take "great pride" in proclaiming that Sissel doesn't need flashy, elaborate cloths -expensive jewelry - nor excessive makeup to be beautiful or a "Star". Make NO mistake - this is VERY true !! However, as she matured, she came to realize that the "complete person" that she presented to the public WOULD have a GREAT effect upon the impression that she made. She sought to present something that is VERY rare in the "entertainment world" -- and a VERY great paradox. She has groomed herself to be perceived as (and to actually BE) a very beautiful, capable, cosmopolitan, elegant, humble, intelligent, loving, modest, sensual, sophisticated, sweet --- "Simple, childlike, country-girl" --- and ESPECIALLY "A Lady". NO EASY FEAT TO BE SURE !! However, she HAS achieved it. As part of her "complete package" - except for rare performances or "glamor shoots" - Sissel usually appears dressed very modestly though, beautifully and elegantly. However, I have no doubt that her cloths are quite expensive and of the highest quality. Take for example the long, loose flowing gowns that she has taken to wearing since turning 50. They are no doubt made of the finest silk, perhaps custom made and hand embroidered with the beautiful decorations. Sissel is constantly changing her hair color and style. She must also employ a master makeup artist - for he/she is charged with the task of bringing out and emphasizing to the maximum Sissel's natural beauty, while at the same time making it appear that she uses no makeup at all. If you CAREFULLY watch a large number of Sissel's videos, this can be seen by the change in the shape of her face from roundish to heart-shaped to quite angular in different videos and photos. She will often also appear quite a bit younger in a photo or video than she did in one from years earlier. None of these things in ANY way diminish the extraordinary wonder of a woman that she is nor minimize her authenticity. She has simply learned with masterful understanding how to take the "raw diamond" of her youth, and to cut and polish it until it is one of the MOST beautiful, extraordinary and rarest of jewels.
Guadalupe definitely has a rare beauty, as can be observed in the videos from her 60's. However, she appears as a very different type of woman from either Anne or Sissel. She emphasizes and reflects an "earthy", external, flashy, sensual, worldly glamor. Both Anna and Sissel extrude a genuineness, modesty and simplicity that appear to be lacking in Guadalupe (at least as she appears on stage). Guadalupe has a very flamboyant, flashy and obvious stage presence. Sissel exhibits a demure, elegant, restrained persona on-stage. Anne, on the other hand, appears to have very little in the way of a developed, personalized, pronounced stage style at all. As someone commented to me once, "Sissel is heavenly and ethereal, while Guadalupe is earthly and sensual". Anna Hawkins, on the other hand is certainly a beautiful woman, but it is a very different form of beauty and person from either of the other two. It is very hard to actually put into words the effect that Sissel's beauty has upon one (especially from her 30's and 40's). It is almost of a transcendent nature, as if it descends upon her from above and engulfs her in a aura of ethereal and radiant glow. Anna's, on the other hand, is much more of an "earthy nature" - it is much coarser - not as refined and delicate. She continues to reflect the unsophisticated look and nature of her "country roots" from New Zealand, even when glamorously attired as in some of her concerts. I want to conclude this article with what I and a VAST number of her fans consider to be the "intangible attribute or quality" that sets Sissel at the pinnacle of the musical world, FAR above any of her contemporaries. It is what I call her "inner or spiritual" qualities. All that is perceived outwardly of her is a manifestation of this "inner person". It is VERY hard to "pin down" the nature of this gift or quality. I have written about it extensively over the last three years in other articles linked from this page, as I have sought to understand the remarkable and singular power that she possesses over the hearts and minds of her fans. It is THIS power, I believe, that separates Sissel not only from the other two artists discussed here, but from ALL of her vocalist peers, and has accounted for her unmatched and remarkable success as both a person and as a vocal artist. I have stated in one of the aforementioned articles, "not all are able to perceive this spiritual power, as many cannot perceive all sounds or colors properly". There are MANY who hear and see Sissel as merely "a lovely singer with a pleasing voice". This is unfortunate, for they are missing out on "one of the wonders of God's creation" Sissel has stated many times that, "all she ever wanted to do was that which she loves most -- TO SING !! It is her mantra and the sustenance of her life. She can not live without it." While God anoints ALL with their respective gifts, I believe that he brought Sissel into this world with the express purpose that, through her person and her voice, she might show forth a portion of His Divine Beauty and Love to mankind. In other words, she was equipped and ordained by God to sing even before her birth !!
God has given to her a gift that is FAR more compelling than is mere charisma. When Sissel sings or talks (as in the "Talks" accompanying some of her videos or in an interview), something about her presence and her voice COMPELS you to listen, watch, and pay close attention. You WANT to experience, hear, and receive EVERYTHING that she has to communicate !! |

Sissel Kyrkjebø, the international singing sensation and national treasure of Norway, is established as one of the world's leading crossover sopranos. Her angelic and powerful voice has made her a national institution. She has contributed haunting vocals for the soundtrack to "Titanic" and "The Lord of the Rings", as well as selling over ten million solo albums. In 2006, her album, "The Spirit of the Season" with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir went to number one on the Billboard Classical Charts, and received a Grammy nomination. She captivated the whole nation of Norway in 1986, when she sang during the break at the Eurovision final in Bergen - only 16 years old and dressed in a white bunad (traditional Norwegian folk costume). Since then, her fame and success have just continued to soar. She has been praised and acclaimed at home and abroad, and masters both the small and the very large formats -- everything from American TV shows to film music. Her singing knows no bounds - she masters all genres - from opera to rap! She has sung all over the world, and has performed duets with singers like Charles Aznavour, Andrea Bocelli, Jose Carreras, Placido Domingo, Mario Frangoulis, Josh Groban, Brian May, Neil Sedaka, Bryn Terfel, Russell Watson and rapper Warren G. Her list of achievements makes you dizzy -- ranging from Schubert to Deep Purple - "O mio babbino caro" to "Udsigter fra Ulrikken". Truly a very remarkable talent and voice that only comes once in our lifetime! It is difficult to say anything that hasn't already been said about Sissel, but "National Treasure" and "Norway's Joint Voice" are two of the terms used about the "girl from Bergen". In 2005, she was knighted by the King of Norway, being the youngest ever to receive this honor. In 2022 she received the "Seven Pillars of Humanity Creativity Award" in recognition for her years of humanitarian work around the world and actions representing the good in humanity. This was her first appearance at this six day festival. In 2025 she was awarded the "Anders Jahre's Culture Prize". This prestigious Norwegian prize, often described as the country's largest honorary award for outstanding contributions to cultural life, was presented to her alongside two other musicians. The total prize amount was NOK 1.5 million, shared among the three recipients. She also received a hand-calligraphed diploma and a beautiful watercolor by Håkon Gullvåg. Sissel was also honored at the "KK Gala 2025" annual awards event celebrating inspiring Norwegian women across various fields for their achievements, contributions, and influence. She was awarded the honorary prize during the gala for her long-standing career and cultural impact. In 2026, Sissel was involved in a Norwegian animated Christmas film entitled, "Julenissens Verksted" (The Christmas Elf's Workshop / Santa's Workshop), It marks her return to voice acting in a film after more than 35 years. It is described as a family-friendly film full of humor, Christmas atmosphere, and a warm holiday message. Sissel provides the voice for the grandmother (farmor). This is a new experience for her --- being involved from the early stages (when only sketches existed), unlike her previous voice work. She has spoken positively about the project. Her only prior major film voice role was as Ariel in the Norwegian dub of Disney's "The Little Mermaid" (1989).
